f you’re leaving a shared account and starting your own Netflix subscription or joining a different household, you don’t need to give up your personal recommendations, viewing history, and watchlists. Netflix allows you to transfer your profile to a new membership, an existing account, or an extra member slot. Here’s how.
Netflix allows you to create up to 5 profiles on a single Netflix account. In the past, your friends outside your household could join your Netflix account and get a profile. Things have changed since 2023. A Netflix account is meant to be shared by people who live together in one household. People who are not in your household have to use their own accounts or join as an extra member to watch Netflix.
Netflix uses IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to determine whether a viewer is watching from home, away, or if a totally different household. It can then block those it suspects of unauthorized activity.
Netflix Standard or Premium plan members can purchase an Extra Member slot and invite people outside their household to use Netflix.
However, users on the Basic or Standard with Ads plans, as well as those who receive Netflix through a third party, are not eligible to add extra members to their account.

With the Netflix profile transfer feature, now leaving someone’s Netflix shared account doesn’t mean losing all your profile personalizations. When transferring to a new or existing account, your profile information will be copied. While to an extra member slot, your information will be moved, and your profile will be removed from the original account.
Make sure Netflix “Profile Transfer” is turned on before transferring:
1. Visit the Netflix website and log in. Choose your profile.
2. Hover your profile icon on the top right corner and choose Transfer Profile.
3. Confirm your profile and click Start Profile Transfer.
4. Select a new account or an existing account.
5. Enter a new email address and password for your account.
To transfer a profile to an extra member slot, the account holder needs to do so when buying the slot.
