Netflix introduced its paid account sharing plan earlier this year and has since implemented the program in Canada, New Zealand, Spain, and Portugal. This plan requires users to pay an additional fee on their subscription to grant access to viewers outside their household.
According to the streaming service, the scheme has proven to be successful. While the number of viewers in the trial regions has decreased as those watching for free decline to become paid members, revenue and growth have, in contrast, increased. As of May 24, 2023, this change has also affected viewers in the US and UK.
Netflix has recently started informing its paying subscribers about additional choices regarding individuals outside their household. In an email, Netflix states, “Your Netflix account is intended for you and the people you reside with – your household.” The company presents two options for handling outsiders on your account: you can transfer an outsider’s profile to a new membership, which the user would be responsible for paying, or you can purchase an extra member slot in addition to your base membership rate to include the outsider on your account.
Netflix allows you to create up to 5 profiles on a single Netflix account. In the past, your friends who are not in your household can join your Netflix account and get a profile. Things have changed this year. A Netflix account is meant to be shared by people who live together in one household. People who are not in your household will need to use their own account to watch Netflix. Netflix Standard or Premium plan members can buy an extra member slot for $7.99 and invite people outside your household to use Netflix.
Netflix uses IP addresses, device IDs and account activity to determine whether a viewer is watching from home, away or if a totally different household. It can then block those it suspects of unauthorised activity.
Netflix provides options for adding extra members to your account, depending on the subscription plan you have. For customers with the Standard plan, priced at $15.49 per month in the US, you have the choice to include one additional member outside your household for an additional cost of $7.99 per month. Premium customers, who pay $19.99 per month, have the opportunity to have two extra members outside their household. However, users on the Basic or Standard with Ads plans, as well as those who receive Netflix through a third party, are not eligible to add extra members to their account.
The aforementioned pricing and rules are not only applicable in the US but also in the UK, where Netflix charges £4.99 per month for extra member slots.
Netflix members who have an a Standard or Premium plan can add an extra member outside your household by buying an extra member slot.
