Netflix uses Household to define who you can share your account with. A Netflix Household includes devices that access your account via the same internet at your main address, typically where your TV is. If Netflix thinks that your device is not included in your Netflix Household, the error message “Your device isn’t part of the Netflix Household for this account” may appear. Here’s how to fix this error, whether you’re at your Household address, traveling, or using Netflix from a different location.

  1. Connect to Your Household WiFi
  2. Update the Netflix Household
  3. Sign Out of Unfamiliar Devices
  4. Get a Code from Netflix
  5. Turn On and Off Airplane Mode
  6. Add an Extra Member
  7. Create Your Own Netflix Account

1. Connect to Your Household WiFi

If you’re encountering this error on your mobile device or computer, check the Wi-Fi connection on your device and ensure it connects to the same Wi-Fi network as your Household TV device. This is particularly useful if you have multiple Wi-Fi networks at your residence, as Netflix might only recognize one for your Household.

For devices frequently used outside your Household, like at work or during travel, remember to open Netflix on the device when connecting to your Household internet once a month. This can help you avoid the “Not Part of the Netflix Household” error.

2. Update Your Netflix Household

If you’ve already connected your mobile device or computer to the Household internet and the error message still appears, update your Netflix Household on your TV. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Netflix app on your TV. Use the back button on your remote to show the menu.
  2. Select “Get Help” > “Manage Netflix Household.”
  3. Select “Update Netflix Household.”
  4. Choose “Send Email” or “Send Text.”
  5. Go to your email inbox and click on “Yes, This Was Me” or click the link in the text message.
    • Note: This link in your email or text expires in 15 minutes.
  6. Select “Confirm Update.”
  7. Go back to your device, restart the Netflix app, or refresh the Netflix web player.

If the “not part of the Netflix Household” error shows up on your TV, you can select the “Update Netflix Household” button to update it directly. Keep in mind that updating your Netflix Household at a new location will set that new place as your primary household, and devices in the original household address may be locked up.

3. Sign Out of Unfamiliar Devices

You don’t need to set up Household if you don’t watch Netflix on TV. Netflix uses IP addresses, device IDs, and account activity to automatically determine the household. If Netflix detects unusual device locations or multiple users are using your Netflix account outside the Household, the “not part of the Netflix Household” message may pop up. In such cases, sign out of unfamiliar devices to make sure the Netflix Household is set correctly.

  1. Go to your Netflix Account:
    • On the Netflix website: Click your profile image and select Account.
    • On the Netflix app: Tap “My Netflix” at the bottom, select the three lines at the top right, and select “Account”.
  2. Select “Manage Access and Devices.”
  3. Select the “Sign Out” button next to any device you want to log out of.
  4. If you can’t recognize which devices need to be signed out, scroll down to the bottom and select “Sign Out of All Devices.” For added security and privacy, consider changing your Netflix account password.

4. Get a Code from Netflix

The “not part of the Netflix Household” error can occur when you’re using a public device, such as a hotel or Airbnb TV, or when you connect your mobile device and computer to a new internet connection while traveling. You can often get a code from Netflix, allowing you to watch temporarily outside of your Household.

  1. When you see the “not part of the Netflix Household” error message, select “Watch Temporarily” on your mobile device and computer, or “I’m Travelling” on TV.
  2. Select Send Email or Send Text
  3. Check your email or text message to get the code.
  4. Go back to Netflix, enter the code, and select Next/Submit Code.

5. Turn On and Off Airplane Mode

A simple solution to remove the “not part of the Netflix Household” message is to turn airplane mode on and off. It can reset the network, refresh the IP address, or clear the cached data, thereby resolving the glitches. For devices without an airplane mode, like a TV, just disconnect from the network and connect back on.

  1. Close the Netflix app or web player on your device.
  2. Turn on airplane mode on your mobile and computer, or disconnect from the internet on your TV.
  3. Open Netflix on your device. Select your profile if prompted.
  4. Turn off airplane mode or connect to the network. The error message will not show up.

6. Add an Extra Member

To share your Netflix account with someone outside your Household without the “not part of the Netflix Household” error, the Extra Member offers an official solution. Netflix allows Standard and Premium plan subscribers to add Extra Members to their accounts. The Standard plan allows for one Extra Member and the Premium plan allows for two. You can’t add Extra Members to Standard with ads plan.

An Extra Member costs $6.99/month with ads or $8.99/month without ads. They enjoy the same features as the Netflix account holder. Extra members have their own account and password, but can only stream and download on one device at a time.

To add an Extra Member to your Netflix account:

  1. Visit the Netflix website and log into your account.
  2. Click your profile image and select Account.
  3. Select “Buy an extra member slot.”
  4. Choose Next to buy an extra member with ads. For an extra member without ads, click the “Or pay for no ads” button. Confirm and finish the payment of your Extra Member.
  5. Send the invitation to the extra member. The member can click the link in the invitation to activate the account.

7. Create Your Own Netflix Account

When the “not part of the Netflix Household” message shows up, Netflix often suggests creating a new account to enjoy your own subscription. While this is not an attractive solution, it is an effective way to resolve the error. Netflix provides three subscription plans: Standard with ads ($7.99/month), Standard ($17.99/month), and Premium ($24.99/month). Find which Netflix plan is best for you and subscribe if needed.
