The Netflix app is widely available on various devices, allowing you to freely choose how to watch your favorite shows and movies. However, if you’re outside your main household, such as at a vacation home, Airbnb, or hotel, Netflix may limit playback on the local TV. A quick fix is to stream from your phone directly to the TV.

Here are ways to get Netflix from your Android or iOS phone onto your TV screen. While some methods require an ad-free Netflix subscription, options are still available if you are on the Standard with Ads tier.

Option 1. In-App Cast

  • Netflix Plan Required: Ad-free plans (Standard, Premium, etc.)
  • Compatible Phones: Android and iOS
  • Compatible TVs: Chromecast (3rd gen or older; did not come with a physical remote), Google Nest Hub Smart Displays, select cast-enabled Vizio TVs, and select cast-enabled Compal TVs

Since the end of 2025, Netflix has dropped casting for most TVs. Basically, if a device has its own physical remote and a native Netflix app, Netflix now requires you to use the remote rather than casting from a phone. To use the in-app casting feature on your phone, you’ll need one of the TV models mentioned above. In addition, you also need to subscribe to an ad-free Netflix plan.

However, one advantage of casting is that it doesn’t require you to install the Netflix app on your TV. You don’t need to sign in to the Netflix TV app.

How to Use:

  1. Ensure that your phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open the Netflix app on your phone. Tap the Cast icon and select your TV from the displayed devices.
  3. Play a movie or show and enjoy seamless viewing on your TV.

Option 2. Screen Mirroring

  • Netflix Plan Required: Ad-free plans (Standard, Premium, etc.)
  • Compatible Phones: Android

Screen mirroring allows you to wirelessly display the exact content of your phone to your TV or computer. This feature is primarily supported on Android devices. You can use it to stream photos, videos, and audio to larger screens. What you see on your phone, you see on the TV.

However, keep in mind that when using screen mirroring to watch Netflix on your TV, your phone’s screen must remain active. It will prevent you from using your phone for other tasks.

Note: Some users have reported that Screen Mirroring Netflix content only works with certain or older phone models. If your phone cannot screen mirror Netflix to your TV, continue to the section on connecting with a cable. Or you can try downloading Netflix videos to MP4/MKV. Then you can Screen Mirror these local files to your TV when playing them on your Android and iOS device.

How to Use:

  1. Open the Netflix app on your Android and play a title.
  2. Swipe down from the top right of your phone to access the Control Center.
  3. Tap the “Screen Mirroring” icon and select your TV. It may have other names such as screen projection, wireless projection, etc.

Option 3. Cable or Adapter Connection

  • Netflix Plan Required: Both with Ads and Ad-free plans
  • Compatible Phones: Android and iOS

Connecting your phone to your TV via an HDMI cable is the most reliable workaround, especially if you are on an ad-free tier or traveling. It mirrors your phone screen directly to the display. Note that your phone screen must remain on during playback, and using other apps will interrupt streaming. Also, for iPhone 14 or older, a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter is required.

How to Use:

  1. Connect your phone to your TV’s HDMI port with the appropriate cable/adapter.
  2. Use your TV remote to select the Input Source.
  3. Open the Netflix app on your phone and play a title. Now you can enjoy the video on your TV.

Option 4. Fast QR Code Sign-In on TV

  • Netflix Plan Required: Both with Ads and Ad-free plans
  • Compatible Phones: Android and iOS

If the TV you are trying to use already has the Netflix app installed, you can use your phone to quickly pair and sign in to your account by scanning the QR code, without typing passwords on the remote.

How to Use:

  1. Open Netflix on your TV and select Sign in.
  2. Open the camera on your Android or iPhone and scan the QR code on your TV.
  3. A link should pop up. Tap the link.
  4. Tap the Sign in to TV button. You’ll be signed in to Netflix on your TV.

Security Note: Always remember to sign out of the Netflix TV app before checking out of a hotel, Airbnb, or vacation rental.

Bonus Tip: How to AirPlay Netflix to TV

  • Netflix Plan Required: Both with Ads and Ad-free plans
  • Compatible Phones: iOS

AirPlay is Apple’s wireless communication protocol, allowing you to stream audio, video, and photos from your Apple devices, like iPhones, to compatible receivers. These include other Apple devices such as Macs and Apple TVs, as well as smart TVs from popular brands such as Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Roku, etc.

However, the Netflix app no longer supports AirPlay from iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Even if you can download Netflix movies and shows with an ad-supported or ad-free account on your iPhone or iPad, these offline files can only be played within the Netflix app and cannot be AirPlayed to your TV.

To use the AirPlay feature from your iPhone, you’ll need to download the Netflix title as local files.  Pazu Netflix Video Downloader can download Netflix movies and TV shows as MP4 and MKV files on Mac and Windows. It converts Netflix content with high quality, up to 1080p, and preserves the original subtitles and audio tracks. Once downloaded, you can watch them on any compatible device or player, or screen mirror or AirPlay them to a larger screen.
