Despite the rapid growth of many rivals over recent years, Netflix remains the market leader in subscription video-on-demand (SVOD). Netflix reported it had 301.6 million subscribers at the end of 2024, including 89.63 million in the U.S. and Canada. Over 220 million people subscribed to Amazon Prime worldwide. However, in May 2025, Prime Video announced over 130 million ad-supported users in the U.S. alone. These two streaming giants distinguish themselves with unique features and highlights. If you are wondering which is better for you, follow this guide for a thorough comparison to make your final decision.

Price

Netflix offers 3 plans: Standard with Ads ($7.99/month), Standard ($17.99/month), and Premium ($24.99/month). You can add 1 extra member to Standard, and 2 to Premium for $6.99/month with ads or $8.99/month without ads. Netflix doesn’t offer a free trial.

Access to Prime Video is included with an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $14.99 a month or $139 a year. For non-Prime members, Prime Video is available as a standalone streaming service for $8.99 a month. In the US, Canada, Brazil, Japan, France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, Australia, the UK, Germany, and Austria, some content includes ads before and during playing. Prime users can upgrade to Go Ad Free for $2.99/month.

Amazon Prime offers a 30-day free trial. If you haven’t been an Amazon Prime member in the last 12 months, you can sign up for a free trial.

Content

There is no fancy stuff on Netflix, you can access almost all content if you subscribe. A small percentage, estimated to be between 5% and 10%, may not be available to the Standard with Ads plan.

Amazon Prime Video is more than a subscription platform. Users can also rent or purchase videos without an Amazon Prime membership. There are also many Premium add-on channels, such as Apple TV+, Max, Paramount+, and live sports programming (like NFL football, NBA basketball, and PGA golf), which require an additional subscription on top of Prime Video.

Amazon Prime Video ranks second in original content selection as of early 2022, behind Netflix, according to U.S. adults. But its still-small stable of original content can’t compete with Netflix’s sheer quantity of shows and movies. To compete with Netflix, Amazon spends hundreds of millions of dollars on the production and marketing of its original series. In 2021, the company spent an estimated $500 million on original programming.

As of 2022, Netflix has over 2,000 original titles, which have garnered 15 Academy Awards and hundreds of nominations. As of the end of 2024, over 55 percent of Netflix US library is original content.

One of the key factors that determines which video streaming service to choose is the titles you want to watch. If you enjoy “Breaking Bad,” “Squid Game,” “You,” “Black Mirror,” “Ozark” and “Mindhunter,” etc., subscribe to Netflix. If you prefer shows such as “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “The Expanse,” “Bosch,”, etc., turn to Amazon Prime Video.

Video Quality

Amazon Video titles are available in different video formats, including Standard Definition (SD), High Definition (HD), Ultra High Definition (UHD or 4K), and HDR (High Dynamic Range), depending on the playback device you’re currently using. The format you select, your playback device, and your Internet connection all affect picture and audio quality. HD video requires a high-speed Internet connection for smooth playback. Almost all Amazon Video titles are available to watch in HD.

Many TV shows and movies are available to watch in high definition (HD), and will automatically play in HD quality if you have a Standard or Premium Netflix account. Not all content is available in HD. Not all devices support streaming in HD. HD (720p), Full HD (1080p), Ultra HD (4K), and HDR availability subject to your internet service and device capabilities.

HD and Ultra HD availability is also determined by your plan. Standard users can access HD content,t and Premium users can access Ultra HD content.

Devices

Only people who live with you may use your account. Watch on 4 different devices at the same time with Premium, 2 with Standard, and 1 with Basic.
Amazon Prime Video allows three concurrent streams within the same Amazon account, and up to two simultaneous streams of the same content.

Netflix doesn’t have an app for Mac, while Amazon Prime Video does. Both apps are available on most smartphones, Xbox consoles, PlayStation consoles, tablets, and smart TVs.

Download Titles

Both of the video streaming services allow you to download movies and TV shows for offline playback. You can download Prime Video shows and movies on Fire tablet, iOS, Android, macOS, or Windows 10 and 11 devices. However, Netflix currently only allows subscribers to download on mobile devices such as Fire tablet, iOS, Android, and Chromebook with the Google Play Store.

However, downloads will expire after a period of time. Once you cancel your subscription, the downloaded titles are no longer playable. Besides, as new titles are added to the video streaming services every month, there are also some titles leaving.
