Hulu Watch Party: How to watch Hulu with friends

Hulu Watch Party is an exciting feature designed exclusively for Hulu subscribers, enabling them to enjoy movies and shows together while connecting from different locations. This innovative feature ensures that all participants have synchronized video playback, creating a shared viewing experience. Furthermore, it adds a group chat function to the content, allowing viewers to engage in real-time conversations.

In a single Watch Party session, up to 8 individuals can join. If participants are using the same Hulu account, they can access the Watch Party through their individual profiles. Hulu allows for the creation of up to six profiles within one account, offering personalized experiences.

Please bear in mind that Watch Party is strictly reserved for users who are at least 18 years old. Accounts and profiles belonging to users under 18 will not have the ability to initiate or participate in Watch Party sessions.

Currently, Hulu Watch Party is only available to subscribers on Hulu.com using a supported web browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari(Mac only), and Microsoft Edge(PC only). For iOS or tvOS users, you can use SharePlay to stream content together during a FaceTime call.

Option 1. Use Hulu’s Watch Party feature

1. Visit Hulu.com on a supported web browser and log in your account. Choose the movie or TV show you want to watch with friends. Click the WATCH PARTY icon.

2. Click START THE PARTY.

3. Copy and share the link below with up to 7 friends to watch the movie or episode together.

4. Your friends or families open the link and click JOIN THE PARTY.

5. One everyone is joined, the host can start the party to watch together. Hulu Watch Party allows you to send text and emojis.

When utilizing Hulu Watch Party, it’s important to keep the following points in mind:

  1. A Hulu subscription is required to either host or join a Watch Party.
  2. All participants must be at least 18 years old.
  3. Participants need to use a supported web browser for the Watch Party feature to work properly.
  4. Each Watch Party can accommodate a maximum of 8 people.
  5. Invitees should use the unique link provided by the host to join the Watch Party.
  6. Please note that only specific on-demand movies and shows from Hulu’s streaming library are available for Watch Party, indicated by the presence of the Watch Party icon.

Note that Hulu watch party currently is only available on Hulu.com using a supported web browser.

  • Mac OS X 10.13 or above, Microsoft Windows 10, and Chrome OS
  • The latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Microsoft Edge on Windows 10

  • JavaScript and Cookies enabled

Alternatively, Hulu users with an iOS or tvOS device can utilize the SharePlay feature to stream content simultaneously while engaged in a FaceTime call. This enables them to enjoy a synchronized viewing experience and share their reactions in real-time, enhancing the social aspect of watching content together.

Option 2. Use SharePlay on Hulu

Hulu subscribers who own an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV can engage in a shared streaming experience using SharePlay*. With SharePlay, users have the ability to create or join sessions where they can watch content directly from Hulu’s vast streaming library. The unique aspect of SharePlay is that it allows individuals to simultaneously watch content while being on a FaceTime call with their friends and family, provided that they also have a Hulu account. This way, everyone involved in the call can enjoy the content together, with each person’s device perfectly synced for a seamless and unified viewing experience. During a SharePlay session, users can stream most shows and movies included in Hulu’s streaming library.

Same as Watch Party, Shareplay is only available for Profiles set to age 18 or older.

What do I need to use SharePlay?

To initiate or join a SharePlay session, you will need the following:

  • A Hulu subscription
  • A supported iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV device running iOS or tvOS 15.1 or later
  • The Hulu app downloaded to your device and signed in

How to start a SharePlay session?

Users can initiate a SharePlay session on iPhone or iPad.

  1. While on FaceTime, open the Hulu app.
  2. Select your profile and you will receive a prompt to enable SharePlay > tap Accept.
  3. Choose the movie or show you’d like to share and press Play.
  4. Once the video starts playing, return to your FaceTime call using the app switcher. The video will continue to play in picture-in-picture while you’re on the FaceTime call.

How to join a SharePlay session?

iPhone and iPad 

  1. Accept the FaceTime call from the host of the SharePlay session.
  2. Once the host begins the session, you will receive a prompt to join > tap Accept. 
  3. Once accepted, you will be automatically taken back to the selected content. 
  4. When anyone presses Play, SharePlay will begin.

Apple TV

  1. Make sure that your Apple TV is signed into the same Apple ID account as your iPhone or iPad. When you press and hold the TV button on your Apple TV remote to show the Control Center, your user should be selected in the list.
  2. After joining the FaceTime call on your iPhone or iPad, turn on your Apple TV.
  3. If you see a “Join SharePlay” notification appear on your TV, press the TV button on your Apple TV remote.  Otherwise, press and hold the TV button on your Apple TV remote, then select SharePlay from the Control Center sidebar.
  4. Select Start on Apple TV on the prompt on your Apple TV to join a SharePlay.
  5. Confirm on your iPhone or iPad device. 
  6. The SharPlay session will begin and the selected content will play. Your FaceTime video and chat will continue on your iPhone or iPad.

Option 3. Use Third-party Watch Party tools on Hulu

1. Hulu Watch Party

Hulu Watch Party is a Chrome extension to binge-watch your favorite shows and movies together with friends.

How to Start Hulu Watch Party?

  1. Visit Hulu Watch Party in Google Chrome browser and add it to Chrome.

2. Click the extension icon on the top right corner and pin it.

3. Open a Hulu video. Click on the Hulu Watch Party extension icon and click on “Start the party” button.

4. Copy the url below to invite others to join the party. All recipients should have Hulu subscription.

5. The recipients also need to install the extension first. Then follow the instructions to join the party.

2. Teleparty

Teleparty is also a browser extension for watching TV remotely with friends, e.g., for movie nights with that long-distance special someone. Besides Hulu, it also supports Netflix, Youtube, Disney Plus, HBO, and Amazon Prime Video. Teleparty premium members can enable audio and video chat. Guests can receive audio / video for free.

  1. Visit Teleparty in Google Chrome browser and install it. Don’t forget to pin it!
  2. Open a Hulu video. Click on the Teleparty icon and click on “Start the party” button.
  3. Send the link to your friends. If they don’t already have Teleparty installed, they will be guided to install it.
  4. Wait for your friends to join then start the video. Chat while you watch and have a great time!
