Snowfall is an American crime drama television series co-created by John Singleton, Eric Amadio, and Dave Andron. Premiering on July 5, 2017, to mixed reviews, the series has evolved into a compelling, distinctive crime drama over six seasons.
Set against the backdrop of the crack epidemic in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, Snowfall chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of Mr. Franklin Saint, a young street entrepreneur driven by an unwavering pursuit of power. The series intricately weaves together the lives of various characters who are on a collision course, including Gustavo “El Oso” Zapata, a Mexican wrestler caught up in a power struggle within a crime family; Teddy McDonald, a CIA operative running an off-book operation to fund the Nicaraguan Contras; and Lucia Villanueva, the ambitious daughter of a Mexican crime lord. As 1984 begins, their desperate search for money, power, and influence fundamentally transforms the fabric of the city.
This street crime epic is both gripping and insightful, as it relentlessly depicts drug trafficking and its far-reaching consequences on both an individual and a societal level. It is a powerful and captivating drama that sheds light on a pivotal moment in American history. If you are a fan of crime dramas or historical dramas, Snowfall is not to be missed.
In Snowfall, the storyline suggesting that the CIA played a role in promoting the crack epidemic by engaging in cocaine trafficking to fund the Contras in Nicaragua is based on Gary Webb’s controversial 1996 series of investigations published in the San Jose Mercury News, as well as his subsequent book titled “Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion.” According to executive producer Dave Andron, the show’s writers assumed that Webb’s reporting was factual. However, he acknowledged that he didn’t believe there was a deliberate conspiracy to introduce crack into inner-city communities or harm a particular population group.
Patricia A. Turner, a dean at UCLA College who specializes in studying folklore and conspiracy theories related to Black culture, pointed out that the notion that the CIA introduced crack into Black communities has been a persistent conspiracy theory since the 1980s.
Snowfall fearlessly and authentically centers its storytelling on the Black experience, and writer and producer Cheo Hodari Coker attributes this to the show’s creator, John Singleton, who passed away in 2019.
Many people believe that Snowfall draws its inspiration solely from the life of “Freeway” Ricky Ross, a prominent Los Angeles drug dealer with alleged connections to the CIA. However, according to Coker, Singleton was actually weaving a much larger narrative.
“Snowfall is an amalgamation of a lot of things. There’s a lot of reality in it because coming from [Singleton’s] neighborhood and seeing things happening in real time — there are memories and texture, and that comes from a real place. At the same time, you know he’s fictionalizing a lot of things. A lot of people want to speculate and say he based it on Freeway Ricky Ross, but Ross’ story went entirely differently,” Coker said. “Snowfall is kind of an amalgam of several people, including Ricky Ross, Michael “Harry-O” Harris, Brian “Waterhead Bo” Bennett, and Thomas “Tootie” Reese,” he added.
